British Gas had provided annual maintenance and service of the Harts’ gas central heating system at their home on Rossmill Lane, Hale. They had inspected it seven months before the incident in April 1999, declaring it satisfactory.

British Gas boss Phil Bentley has sent a personal apology to a customer who was hounded for eight months by the company as it sent her a string of computer generated threatening letters for money she did not owe.
Apart from the obvious despair at the company involved, I tend to find myself wondering quite how the downtrodden householder ended up with such a clearly wrong bill and continued to pay it. But since my girlfriend and I moved into our new flat last August, I’ve gained a little insight into some of these stories – British Gas is institutionally moronic.
I can firmly state that I have never had to deal with a firm as incompetent, bullying, or incapable of rectifying a simple mistake as British Gas.

Well here’s a refreshing change that’ll have scores of Bitterwallet readers across the land cheering into their afternoon tea; a woman has been praised by a judge for taking British Gas to court for bad customer service. Can you hear the roar? Can you? A property investor has been told by the Court of Justice she can sue British Gas for £10,000, for harassing her over money she didn’t owe. Which? reports that Lisa Ferguson left British Gas as a customer in 2006, but continued to receive bills and threatening letters for the next five months. Despite letters, phone calls and assurances that the matter would be sorted, it wasn’t and the threats continued.
‘We couldn’t believe what we read,’ says Janette, 63. ‘It said our monthly payments were going to be increased from £92 a month to £186, despite the fact we were in credit. We were convinced there had been a mistake.’
A disabled man has been left angry and upset after he received a threatening letter from British Gas over what turned out to be a debt of just £8.

British Gas broke our boiler on our return when allegedly servicing it, leaving us with no heating for four days and refusing to do anything about it, even though it was their fault, as it was a weekend. Useless bloody company they are. I am still waiting for a call back from the manager of the so-called customer service centre more than a week later. I’ll be changing suppliers and I urge you all to do so as British Gas clearly has no concept of the phrase ‘customer service’.
He admits that when he joined the company, the standard of customer service was “very poor … With the benefit of hindsight, are there things we would have done differently? Yes, definitely.

another problem has been their poor automated system which asks for your name and also asks for your post code as well, If you say it correct it will still say its wrong and is something really frustrating about trying to contact customer services at British Gas

One question has been dominating life in the Grimley household this week: can we stop British Gas sending debt collectors round to seize my 80-year-old mother-in-law’s furniture?
Why, why why is this company still trading when it has more than double the number of up held complaints to energywatch than the rest of the utilities companies combined.?
Bills can also be inaccurate and based on estimates that bear no relation to reality. Efforts to rectify them are often met with a brick wall.
British Gas was found to be the worst of the utility companies, coming third in the top five worst overall performer. Watchdog Energywatch says that it currently receives seven times more gripes about British Gas than some of its rivals while the latest annual customer service survey by the internet comparison website uSwitch concluded that British Gas’s customer service record was the worst in the industry.
When an engineer was finally sent out, he disputed the claim, stating that all the gas appliances were working correctly.
Mr Evans told the Sutton Guardian: “I feel angry about all of this. My neighbour and I were phoning British Gas for days without getting through and he is now going to have a huge phone bill.
